The human heart has four chambers. The top two chambers are known as atria and the bottom chambers are known as ventricles. All the four Chambers are separated from each other by a wall. However, in some people there might be a hole or opening in this wall, which allows the free flow of blood to the other side.
There can be two types of defects in the heart Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) - Atrial Septal Defect is marked by an opening between the left atrium and the right atrium. This allows the oxygenated blood to leak into the right side. Due to this reverse flow there is tremendous pressure on the right atrium to pump enough blood to the lungs.
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) - The problem of VSD is usually congenital and marked by an opening in the ventricular septum that separates the lower chambers of the heart
Our cardiologist Dr Sandeep Parekh aims to treat this problem also known as "Hole in the Heart" by performing a cath procedure to close this gap or hole.
As per Dr Sandeep Parekh, Senior Cardiologist at Arogya Heart Centre and Indus Hospital, Dera Bassi, Chandigarh, " Every baby is born with a small opening there. The hole usually closes a few weeks or months after birth. But sometimes a baby is born with a larger hole that doesn’t close properly. Then as a cardiologist we need to repair the defect in the heart."
SYMPTOMS
Abnormal Heart Rhythm and Rate
Enlarged Heart
Pulmonary Hypertension
Cyanosis (Nails turning blue)
Shortness of Breath
ASD or VSD Closure or Heart Hole Closure can be done in two ways. Either through a minimally invasive approach in a cath lab or as an open heart surgery. The decision on what type of procedure needs to be done to close the ASD or VSD or Hole in the Heart depends upon the size of the hole or the defect as our cardiologist in Mohali, Punjab Dr Sandeep Parekh would call it.
Device Closure of Heart Hole or ASD/VSD at Indus Hospital, Dera Bassi, Chandigarh in Punjab - If patient has a smaller ASD or VSD or in simple words hole of small size and no other heart complications then Dr Sandeep Parekh would be the cardiologist who would close the hole or defect in the heart wall using an implant. Dr Sandeep Parekh performs the procedure in a Cath Lab at Indus Hospital, Dera Bassi, Chandigarh, Punjab. In cases of small defect of heart device closure is the best line of treatment. This method is less invasive and patient recovers quickly. Since it is minimally invasive procedure and does not need an open surgery hence the chances of risk and complications are very low.
Open Heart Surgery for Heart Hole or ASD/VSD Closure at Indus Hospital, Dera Bassi, Chandigarh in Punjab - The defect or the hole in the heart wall is big then the patient will most likely undergo an open heart surgery for the closure of defect. This procedure requires longer stay in the hospital and higher risk.
When it comes to device closure as a treatment for the hole in the heart or ASD/VSD then Dr Sandeep Parekh is one of the best cardiologist or heart specialist in the tricity of Panchkula, Chandigarh and Mohali in Punjab. Dr Sandeep Parekh performs the procedure in Cath Lab at Indus Hospital, Dera Bassi, Chandigarh. However, patients can consult Dr Sandeep Parekh at his clinic Arogya Heart Centre located in Kharar in Mohali.
